The Mozambican police have accused armed Renamo men of killing one, causing serious injury to nine others and light injuries to 22 in attacks in the centre of the country last week.
In an assessment of the situation between the 25th and 30th of June, the General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) reports that the fatality was a civilian travelling in an escorted column between Rio Save and Muchúnguè in Sofala province which was attacked on 30 June by alleged gunmen of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo).
All the injured were hurt in attacks in Manica and Sofala provinces, which have been at the centre of clashes between the armed wing of the main opposition party and the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces, and the military escorts put in place to ensure safety on the region’s roads were the target in all cases.
“In order to perpetuate a climate of peace, order, security and public tranquility, the police call on all citizens to assist by reporting any act tending to prejudice public order,” the police spokesman said.
The Mozambican government and Renamo announced last week that invitations had been sent to the European Union (EU), the Catholic Church and South Africa to act as mediators in peace negotiations in Mozambique.
Mozambique’s main opposition party is claiming the right to govern in the six provinces where it claims victory in the general elections in 2014, accusing the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) of having governance of the country by electoral fraud.
