Only two schools in Maputo city reported positive COVID-19 cases to the health department. Meanwhile, the Mozambican capital is introducing rapid coronavirus testing in all health units.
The third wave of Covid-19 is relentless and less selective in the people it infects, as well as the places where it spreads. Conversations about positive cases in schools have become commonplace in recent days.
The city of Maputo has so far confirmed only 14 positive cases among teachers and students, and only two educational establishments have reported Covid-19 situations to the health directorate in the country’s capital.
“When we have a case at school level, the school automatically notifies the district and the nearest health unit. Taking into account that all educational institutions are able to comply with the measures, we advise schools to carry out the normal disinfection procedure,” said Ramine Falume, head of the Department of Public Health in Maputo.
In situations where the process is complex, the health authorities intervene directly in schools which report cases.
“We have one school where we intervened intensively – the one which had many cases. We supported disinfection and, so far, the situation has not forced us to close the educational establishment,” Falume relayed.
At the same time, all health units in Maputo city are being equipped to perform rapid tests for Covid-19 screening. Seventeen of the 35 health units in the capital have already started the process. “We believe that, by next week, all health units will be performing rapid testing,” Falume said.
Only those who have coronavirus symptoms are eligible for the rapid test.
