At least seventeen members of staff at the Central Hospital of Beira (HCB) are infected with the new coronavirus, the director general of that health unit, Nelson Mucopo, revealed some days ago.
Speaking exclusively to ‘Notícias’, Mucopo acknowledged that the professionals in question “have mild symptoms, but we already have one colleague who died of Covid-19, last week”.
Mucopo considered the management of the Beira Central hospital a delicate matter, especially in a scenario in which people are used to being close to each other.
“The biggest difficulty we have had is to manage the people who accompany patients. What we would like is a hospital with only patients in it,” he explains.
He cites the example of people who come to visit a neighbour or a friend, thinking they are doing the right thing, but, in the current context, this is not the case, and they can actually bring illnesses to the person being visited.
“The hospitalised patient has other pathologies, and is fragile. The risk of being contaminated by Covid-19 is greater. So, the visitor ends up contaminating the patient who, in turn, infects the professionals who are assisting him or her,” Mucopo explained.
