The government of Rwanda on Friday announced it is deploying troops to the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado at the request of the Mozambican government.
The Rwandan statement said the contingent consists of 1,000 members of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and of the Rwanda National Police (RNP).

This joint force, the statement continues, “will work closely with the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) and with forces from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in designated sectors of responsibility”.
Describing Cabo Delgado as a province “currently affected by terrorism and insecurity”, the statement declares that “the Rwandan contingent will support efforts to restore Mozambican state authority by conducting combat and security operations, as well as stabilisation and security sector reform”.
“This deployment”, the statement concludes, is based on the good bilateral relations between the Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of Mozambique, following the signing of several agreements between the two countries in 2018, and is grounded in Rwanda’s commitment to the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and the 2015 Kigali Principles on the Protection of Civilians”.
So far there has been no comment from the Mozambican authorities.
