Deputies of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (AP-CPLP) on Thursday approved two resolutions and six motions, one on support for Mozambique in the fight against terrorism, and another on attempts to abolish the death penalty in Equatorial Guinea.
The approval of the motion in support of Mozambique came after the Portuguese-speaking countries organisation analysed the situation in Cabo Delgado, where armed attacks have displaced thousands of people and caused hundreds of deaths.
“CPLP parliamentarians express their solidarity with the Mozambican people and with the efforts of the authorities of the Republic of Mozambique, with a view to restoring normality and security conditions in that region, for the good of the population, and the conditions necessary for development of the country, while being attentive to the possibilities of international cooperation that the Mozambican authorities deem appropriate for the stabilisation of the situation of peace and security,” the motion details.
AP-CPLP deputies also took note of the work in progress in Equatorial Guinea, for the revision of penal laws, creating the expectation of significant advances in terms of the abolition of the death penalty in the country.
Still in the process of approving proposals, deputies approved motions in support of Angola and Timor-Leste following natural disasters that caused deaths and the destruction of infrastructure, and following the explosions that took place in the city of Bata, Equatorial Guinea.
The AP-CPLP also approved a motion to congratulate António Guterres on his re-election to the position of UN secretary general, in which they emphasise that his reappointment “redounds to the pride not only of Portugal, but of the entire Portuguese-speaking community”.
In addition to the motions and resolutions, the deputies debated how far the AP-CPLP can go, “taking into account the fight against the pandemic and also the economic and sustainable development”, vice-president of parliament , Edite Estrela, told journalists.
“There is an express will on the part of everyone to unite in the fight against climate change, in technological development, and in the fight against the pandemic itself,” she said.
The deputy speaker of the parliament also noted that an appeal was made to the European Union, to “make a significant contribution so that Africa benefits from more vaccines and can also contain the pandemic”.
The AP-CPLP took place between Wednesday and Thursday in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, and was dedicated to the theme “Business environment and sustainable development in CPLP countries after Covid-19”.
