The Ministry of Health (MISAU) has just reinforced capacity to cope with Covid-19 in the Maputo metropolitan region, with the entry into operation of an isolation centre at the Mavalane General Hospital.
The measure comes in response to the increased demand for Covid treatment in recent days. According to an update on Tuesday (June 29), there are now 176 Covid-19 hospital inpatients, as against 14 on June 1st.
The Mavalane unit will eventually be able to treat 320 patients with complications related to Covid-19, and an infirmary with capacity for 60 beds has been in operation since Monday.
“We received our first patient on Monday and this afternoon (yesterday), another five patients transferred from Maputo Central Hospital. We are also preparing a tent with a capacity for 170 patients, and it is ready to serve patients if demand continues to grow,” National Director of Medical Assistance Luísa Panguene said.
ln Tete province, where there is also an increase in hospital admissions, the sector is preparing the transfer of patients to Health Centre 2, with a capacity of 70 beds, against the 38 beds in the unit currently operating.
Panguene noted that 18 Covid-19 patients were already hospitalized in Tete, putting the capacity of reception centres in the region to test.
Panguene urged greater attention to signs that patients in home isolation may need hospitalizing, including tiredness, breathing difficulties and difficulty walking.
With the country registering a growing number of cases, hospitalisations and deaths from Covid-19, Panguene recommends the consumption of foods that strengthen the immune system, such as salads and fruit.
Meanwhile, the daily Covid-19 update reports the hospitalisation, between Monday and Tuesday, of 50 patients with complications related to the disease, and the registration of three deaths in the city and province of Maputo.
In the same period, authorities diagnosed 406 new coronavirus cases, bringing to 75,828 the number of people infected to date.
Twenty-nine patients have been discharged from isolation centres to continue their treatment at home.
