The Minister of National Defence, Jaime Neto, said this Wednesday that the instability caused by terrorism in Cabo Delgado was under control, despite the hundreds of displaced people fleeing in search of refuge to Pemba, especially from the district of Palma, O País reports.
Hundreds of displaced people arrive in the provincial capital daily, often on boats lacking basic safety features.
Those displaced report continued attacks in some regions, but the Minister of National Defence says that the situation is under control, and that “the Defence and Security forces continue to inflict heavy blows on the terrorists”.
“Of course, when there is an attack, there are situations where the populations move from one point to another, but in general, the situation is under control,” Neto summarised.
The minister also said that support was on its way to help the Mozambican army fight the terrorists creating instability in the province, highlighting the training of the men and women serving in the northern operational theatre.
“There are several instances of concrete support, in training for example. The United States of America, Portugal and other SADC countries are supporting training which is invaluable to us. We should not understand support only in terms of material help in facing the situation; training is also of great value, because it gives us knowledge that we didn’t have and helps us better understand and address the situation,” Minister Neto said.
The defence minister expressed regret at the situation, and solidarity with the victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
The displaced arriving in Pemba continue to face difficulties, ranging from accommodation to access to food.
