Mozambican, Zimbabwean nationals among those killed in Pretoria shack fire

Gauteng Premier David Makhura says the emotional and physical well-being of those affected by a shack fire at the Plastic View informal settlement is government’s main priority.

Makhura has visited the informal settlement in the east of Pretoria where five people were killed and at least 300 shacks were destroyed in an overnight fire.

He has assured residents, who are predominantly foreign nationals, that government is intervening to assist and will ensure no one is deported.

The premier says government will do all it can to help affected residents in the Plastic View informal settlement regardless of their nationality.

“People have lost literally everything because of this fire. We don’t want to make documents an issue, we are dealing with human disaster and we want to settle people and save lives.”

Officials say the five people who died in the fire were from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Makhura also addressed a church service in the settlement where he asked residents to pray for God to bless Africa.

He has asked that there be no pre-occupation with whether Plastic View residents are in the country legally or not.
