A protocol signed in Maia, Portugal, on June 7 between the Institute of Scholarships of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Mozambique and the CICCOPN (Centre for Professional Training of the Civil Construction Industry and Public Works of the North) puts the seal on a programme facilitating professional training for young Mozambicans in the civil construction and public works sector.
Students on the programme will be able to study in Portugal on scholarships that provide benefits similar to those enjoyed by Portuguese students.
These young Mozambicans will then be able to bring their skills back home or to join the sector in Portugal or elsewhere.
Trainees will be able to intern with companies operating in Portugal or Portuguese companies operating in Mozambique.
The protocol was signed at CICCOPN’s Maia premises by the Director General of the Scholarship Institute of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Mozambique, Carla Caomba, and by CICCOPN’s Chair of the Board of Directors, Carla Alexandra do Vale.
Speaking after the signing, Carla Caomba explained that the agreement “reinforces the Government of Mozambique’s effort to support young people’s access to higher education”.
“Mozambique is going through a troubled period, and this agreement responds to the concern of young people, especially in Cabo Delgado province, with regard to professional training,” she added.
Caomba also believes that the partnership will be “responding to the general guidelines of the government, by awarding scholarships to specific areas of technical and professional education”, underlining that the variety of courses that CICCOPN offers presents “an opportunity for young people to train with quality”, with the possibility of post-training integration in companies in Mozambique an “advantage for both Mozambicans and the government”.
In turn, Carla Maia do Vale, Chair of the Board of Directors of CICCOPN, says that this very important project “not only allows for the training and qualification of young people from a sister country which shares the same language, but the training of these young people can also allow them, returning to their country, to take home this learning and knowledge, therefore enhancing Mozambique, while offering the choice of staying in Portugal”.
Vale explained that the protocol allows CICCOPN “to receive and welcome young Mozambicans and include them in CICCOPN’s training offer, be it short or long term”, and that it can at the same time “bring some hope to these young people, in the sense of learning a profession in safe conditions”.
