On Thursday (27-05), Amina Mohammed met virtually with regional personalities from the Network of African Women Leaders.
At the event, the former presidents of Malawi, Joyce Banda, of the Central African Republic, Catherine Samba-Pandza, and of Mauritius, Ameena Gurib-Fakim, delivered messages of solidarity and support.
Former Mozambican first lady and social activist Graça Machel, and former Mozambican prime minister Luísa Diogo, also participated in the event.
The United Nations supports greater mobilisation of women, strengthening the leadership and representation of the group to promote progress and the implementation of inclusive and sustainable responses.
More than 714,000 people, mostly women and girls, have been forced to leave their homes by the activity of insurgents in Cabo Delgado.
Thousands of children have had to drop out of school, and the humanitarian crisis threatens communities’ livelihoods. There have been reports of human rights violations by both the insurgents and the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces.
