Tanzanian football players arrested trying to make Mozambican ID cards – Carta

Three Tanzanian football players who play for Clube Desportivo de Pemba in Cabo Delgado province have been detained for attempting to forge Mozambican identity cards (BIs).
According to National Directorate of Civil Identification (DNIC) spokesman Alberto Sumbana, who announced the news on Tuesday morning, the individuals already had false birth certificates.
“The three individuals are said to be affiliated to the Clube Desportivo de Pemba, because on their cards, which bind them with this institution, they said they are Mozambicans, while in fact they are Tanzanians,” Sumbana told a press conference.
Sumbana said that this was not the only illegal attempt to obtain a Mozambican identification document registered last week. In Nampula, another foreign citizen was also arrested while trying to obtain a Mozambican ID card.
“Fortunately, we are attentive, and we have been tackling these attempts to acquire BIs illegally,” Sumbana stressed, promising that the authorities would continue to work towards fully clarifying such cases.
