Residents of Combomune Rio in Mabalane district, northern Gaza province, are complaining that elephants on the loose after escaping from Limpopo National Park have destroyed larger areas of their crops.
Ripening maize is chief among the casualties, villagers complained to Governor of Gaza, Margarida Mapandzene Chongo, during a working visit she paid to Mabalane on Tuesday.
According to the distressed farmers, the fence between the Limpopo National Park and the buffer zone on the banks of the Limpopo River, where subsistence agriculture is practiced, must be completed as a priority.
Faced with this outcry, Governor Margarida Chongo promised that the government would redouble its efforts to reduce conflict between man and wildlife throughout the park area.
