The Southern African Development Community Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit will take place in Maputo tomorrow, Thursday (27 May ) under the leadership of President Filipe Nyusi, incumbent chair of the SADC.
Initially scheduled for April, the meeting was postponed, ostensibly because the President of Botswana was in quarantine and President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, had a court hearing.
Observers, however, suggest that President Nyusi’s reluctance to accept an SADC military force as proposed by the organization’s committee of experts after a visit to Cabo Delgado was the true cause of the postponement.
The SADC military force would comprise around 3,000 men and heavy material to fight the terrorists who, in addition to destroying much infrastructure, have caused more than 2,000 deaths and displaced more than 700,000 Cabo Delgado natives since October, 2017.
President Nyusi has repeatedly said that he prefers bilateral aid, but well-informed observers and sources point out that, following recent pressure from partners such as France and close leaders like South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and Paul Kagame from Rwanda, who has offered men, the Mozambican president is likely to accept military aid, subject to certain conditions.
President Lazarus Chakwera will on Thursday attend the Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) Extraordinary Double Troika Summit in Maputo, Mozambique.
