Parents and guardians in the village of Maileliha, Murrupula district, Nampula province, say that they need a primary school to shorten travelling distances for pupils.
Parents are worried that their children have to walk about eight kilometres to school, a factor that contributes to them dropping out, and the increasing illiteracy in the community.
In the rainy season, their children are unable to go to school at all, because they have to cross a river where they run the risk of being carried away.
Another concern raised by Maileliha residents is the lack of potable drinking water. They say that they are forced to consume water from the rivers, giving rise to diarrheal diseases.
Maileliha village leader Francisco Sousa confirms the difficulties faced by the community, adding that the Cazuzo authorities know of their concerns, but do nothing to solve them.
He detailed the students’ sufferings, and how people have to go far to get water in the summer. The people are forgotten by the government, he says, and are never visited by the leaders of their own province.
Rádio Encontro asked Sousa if he knew who the governor of Nampula province was.The community leader of Maileliha village replied that he had never heard of his name, much less seen him.
