The Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) says it needs 25,800 additional classrooms to accommodate the more than 4,800 classes still studying in the open in the country’s schools.
The figures were announced on Monday by Minister of Education Carmelita Namashulua at the reception ceremony for two books about the 2017 population census aimed at primary and secondary school students.
Namashulua said that the government was continuing to work to ameliorate the current scenario.
The books in question were delivered to MINEDH by the National Statistics Institute (INE), with the aim of encouraging students to learn about the evolution of the Mozambican population through texts and numbers.
The minister said it was important for students to learn about the importance of statistics from an early age.
“These two books will reach our students and inculcate in them a taste for numbers. Knowledge about statistics is also important for the improvement of methods and projections for good management in the education sector,” she underlined.
INE president Mónica Magaua explained that one of the books is aimed at primary school students, with the goal of encouraging them to learn about statistics through texts and numbers.
“The second, in cartoon format, aims to convince secondary school students of the importance of statistical data in their daily lives,” she said.
Andrea Wojnar, representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), pointed out that the dissemination of 2017 census data to children and young people was an important step towards guaranteeing Mozambique’s commitments regarding comprehensive sex education, and was also relevant to integrating the 2020-2029 Strategic Plan.
