Human error was the probable cause of the “serious incident” involving a Mozambique Airlines Boeing B737-700 at Quelimane airport on February 26 of this year, a Mozambican Civil Aviation Institute (IACM) press conference in Maputo disclosed on Wednesday.
Commander João de Abreu, chairman of the IACM Board of Directors, said that the fact that the runway was short (1,800 meters) and wet at the time had also contributed to the incident.
The operator, João de Abreu said, would have to carry out a thorough analysis on the use of the Boeing B737-700 aircraft on shorter runways, such as those at Quelimane, Nampula and Pemba airports.
Commander De Abreu also indicated a need for additional crew training for landing in adverse weather conditions.
Statements by the aircraft’s commander, De Abreu relayed, revealed that, after touching down at Quelimane Airport, the plane failed to slow down sufficiently quickly, and, to prevent the aircraft running off the end of the runway, he opted rather to divert it off to the left-hand side.
The aircraft suffered minor structural damage, De Abreu said.
The LAM plane, with five crew members and 99 passengers on board, was flying the Maputo/Quelimane/Tete/Maputo route.
In reaction to the report, LAM noted that it has since taken preventive measures, and will now follow the IACM recommendations in detail.
“As LAM is a company that is governed by national and international certification standards, it carries out its flight operations according to the procedures established by the authorities,” LAM said in a statement distributed on Wednesday, pledging to continue to safeguard the operational safety of flights.
