President Filipe Nyusi this Wednesday morning (12-05) swore into office the new members of the Higher Mass Media Council (CSCS), taking the opportunity to highlight the importance of discipline in journalistic activity, ‘O Pais’ reports.
“Journalism is a noble profession, and must be exercised with discipline,” the president said. “To have discipline is to report only the truth, to combat fake news and not to incite violence and hatred.”
Noting that the Higher Mass Media Council is both a consultative and disciplinary body, and charged with guaranteeing the independence of the media, President Nyusi described the 11 members’ role as “delicate”, and commented on some of the challenges currently facing the media sector.
“We would urge this body to encourage debate on issues that aim to restore social values, which have been lost. There must also be responsibility when reporting on the attacks in Cabo Delgado. You must remember during the exercise of your activities the observance of professional ethics and deontology, avoiding incitement to violence in Cabo Delgado. There must be respect for human life, so there is a need to restore human values,” President Nyusi said.
Rogério Sitoe was appointed president of the Higher Mass Media Council, alongside members Paulina Ricardo Chiziane, Jorge da Conceição Matine, João de Brito Munguambe, José Guerra, Carmen Lizi dos Santos, José Alfredo Macaringue, Alexandre Chiúre, Eliseu Bento Mascarenhas, Suzana Espada and Jeremias Langa.
