Last year, Vale Moçambique invested more than 290 million meticais in the acquisition of products and services from national companies. The investment, which aimed to reinforce the focus on local content, corresponds to 17% of the total amount of the mining company’s expenses.
Based on its commitment to local content, Vale facilitates greater inclusion in the value chain of companies established in Mozambique, promoting sustainable development that benefits the local economy.
At least 52% of suppliers hired in 2020 are local companies that, with Vale’s support, have gradually improved the quality of the products and services they provide to the company.
Every year, the mining company conducts ‘Vale Day’, an initiative aimed at encouraging suppliers and potential suppliers to visit the company’s facilities and familiarise themselves with the process involved in the production of coal. By so doing, suppliers are helped to identify the main needs of the company and develop better-tailored procurement proposals.
In 2020, Vale Moçambique invited 100 managers of small and medium-sized national companies to participate in two virtual sessions, with the purpose of publicizing its production process, social action, local content and sustainability opportunities. Cafeteria, registration and supply chain suppliers also came to better understand the company’s requirements in the preparation of technical and commercial proposals for the provision of products and services.
In the last 15 years, Vale has invested more than US$12 billion in its operation in Mozambique, creating about 20,000 jobs. The company currently employs 13,000 workers, direct and indirectly.
Vale Moçambique is thus enabled to put into practice one of its core values, to “Grow and Evolve Together”, fostering a closer relationship between local suppliers and the company, and providing enhanced training for the companies that comprise its value chains.
