The Government of Mozambique has cancelled the birth and identity documents of 1,065 Mozambicans issued in 2009 during a mass registration campaign in Malawi.
In 2009, the team sent to Malawi registered Mozambicans and issued ‘cédulas’ and ID cards, but their data were not entered into any computerised database.
With the start of data collection in the city of Blantyre for the issuance of biometric identity and travel documents, Mozambicans carrying handwritten identity cards are now obliged to acquire new ones, the old ones now considered invalid.
The services established in Malawi for this purpose say that the previous registration data had not been included in data system now used for the issuance of ID cards and passports.
The head of the Mozambican community in Nsanje district, Pedro Pinto, has criticised the government’s decision and asked for it to be reviewed, and the consul of Mozambique in Blantyre, André Matusse, recognises that it is embarrassing for the Mozambican community.
The revocation of the 2009 birth and identity documents obliges holders to travel to Mozambique to renew their birth and identity registration before getting a passport.
