The Mozambican health authorities on Sunday announced that a further 19 people have been diagnosed with the Covid-19 respiratory disease, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country to 69,984.
According to a Health Ministry press release, since the start of the pandemic, 521,012 people have been tested for the coronavírus that causes Covid-19, 807 of them in the previous 24 hours. Over half of the tests took place in the far south – 329 in Maputo city and 107 in Maputo province. There were also 119 tests in Inhambane, 95 in Manica, 58 in Sofala, 55 in Nampula, 21 in Niassa, 11 in Zambezia, eight in Tete, three in Cabo Delgado and one in Gaza.
788 of the tests yielded negative results and 19 people tested positive for the coronavirus. The positivity rate (the proportion of those tested found to be infected) on Sunday was 2.4 per cent. This compares with three per cent on Saturday, 3.3 per cent on Friday, 3.2 per cent on Thursday, 3.4 per cent on Wednesday, and 6.1 per cent on Tuesday.
Of the 19 positive cases, ten were from Maputo city, and five were from Maputo province. So Maputo city and province provided 78.9 per cent of the cases. There were also two cases from Nampula, one from Zambezia and one from Inhambane.
Over the same 24 hour period, the number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 treatment units remained 42. 31 of these patients (73.8 per cent) were in Maputo. There were also five patients in Sofala, three in Nampula, and one each in Niassa, Zambezia and Inhambane. No patients were hospitalised in the Covid-19 wards in the other five provinces.
The Ministry release also reported that a further 48 people were declared fully recovered from Covid-19 on Sunday – 22 in Maputo province, 18 in Manica, five in Inhambane and three in Zambezia. This brings the total number of recoveries to 66,931, or 95.6 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active Covid-16 cases fell to 2,234 (down from 2,264 on Saturday). The geographical distribution of these cases was as follows: Maputo city, 855 (38.3 per cent of the total), Maputo province, 818; Sofala, 293; Zambezia, 126; Nampula, 37; Gaza, 32; Inhambane, 23; Niassa, 21; Cabo Delgado, 17; Manica, 10; and Tete, two.
After four days when no Covid-19 deaths were reported, on Sunday the Ministry reported the death of a 73 year old Mozambican man in Maputo city. This brought Mozambique’s total Covid-19 death toll to 815.
