A 38-year-old man is being held in Inhambane on charges of trafficking in human beings, Jornal Domingo reports.
The alleged trafficker was apprehended in Maxixe by a team from the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Inhambane, while transporting 18 people aged between 17 and 40.
The trafficked people were recruited in the district of Mossurize, Manica province, and were being taken to Mpumalanga, South Africa, where they would allegedly work on a farm.
Under SERNIC interrogation, none of the alleged victims was able to name the owner of the farm they were going to, saying only that they had received the proposal to go to work in the neighbouring country while still in Mossurize.
They also revealed that they were excited by the proposal, because there was a guarantee that the work would help to improve their living conditions and that of their families.
According to SERNIC spokesman Alceres Cuamba, what attracted attention to the SERNIC team was that the vehicle in which the group were travelling was not designed to transport so many people.
