About 40 vessels belonging companies that used to provide services to the French oil company Total are idling at anchor in Pemba Bay as a result of the terrorist invasion of Palma district.
The Maritime Administration in Cabo Delgado reveals that it has received many requests for ships to depart for Nacala port, in Mozambique, and some to Mombasssa.
A similar scenario is to be seen at Paquitequete beach, where sailing boats which used to ply routes from Pemba to Quissanga, Mocimboa da Praia and Palma, among other destinations, have been docked for months.
Some of the sailing boats’ owners have changed tack and gone into either fishing, or transporting passengers and cargo [from Pemba] to Ibo, Missanja or Namau.
The National Maritime Institute has so far this year licenced around 50 vessels for fishing and transporting cargo in the province of Cabo Delgado.
The Maritime Administration in Cabo Delgado, meanwhile, has confirmed the suspension of all [passenger] routes to the centre and north of Cabo Delgado province, with the exception of Ibo Island.
