The Mozambican health authorities announced on Thursday that 25 health professionals have died from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, since the first case was recorded in the country on 22 March 2020.
According to Zacarias Zindonga, the Permanent Secretary on the Ministry of Health, 3,270 health workers have been infected by the coronavirus that causes Covid-19. 440 of these were doctors.
“Unfortunately, we have to lament the deaths of 25 health professionals who fell victim to Covid-19”, he said, at a ceremony in Maputo, marking World Health Day.
The pandemic, he added, is a harsh test of the honour, professional duty, integrity and resilience of health workers.
During the ceremony, a mural was inaugurated in front of Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) in tribute to all the health professionals who have taken part in caring for patients infected with the coronavirus.
“This mural”, said Zindonga, “symbolizes the recognition by Mozambicans of the dedication shown by doctors, nurses, auxiliaries, stretcher-bearers, drivers, administrative staff, and other health workers, who have made an invaluable contribution to the struggle against Covid-19”.
He declared that the government will continue to provide material resources, and train more health workers, with the goal of eradicating the virus in Mozambique.
As examples. Zindonga cited the transformation of the Polana Canico Hospital in Maputo into a unit specialised in treating people suffering from Covid-19, and the conversion of the area where the HCM ophthalmology services used to work into a Covid-19 isolation centre.
“Right from the start, bold decisions were taken to avoid imbalances in the offer of health services, and the response to the various illnesses which assail the population”, he added. “Capacities to hospitalise Covid-19 patients have been created in all the general hospitals in the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Area”.
All the provinces, Zindonga continued, also have isolation centres dedicated to patients suffering from Covid-19.
Meanwhile, the vaccination of health professionals against Covid-19 is well advanced. Administration of the first dose of the vaccine began on 9 March, and of the second dose on 29 March.
