Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) yesterday launched an offensive against the terrorists attacking civil, public and business targets in Palma, the gas capital of Rovuma, since Wednesday.
The offensive, suggestively called a “cleansing”, involved all branches of the FDS – air, sea and land – and had the support of private military companies operating in Cabo Delgado, including the Dyck Advisory Group (DAG) and Control Risk, a security firm based in London.
‘Carta’ sources report that the offensive was successful. “Insurgents are on the run, without ammunition or supplies, in the direction of the Rovuma River and probably Tanzania. The situation on the ground has changed radically, from shooting to chasing,” a source said.
Meanwhile, ‘Carta’ has just received details according to which the terrorists have received reinforcements and are again fighting in the vicinity of the town of Palma.
A new factor in the fight against the terrorists is the entry of Control Risk on the scene. Unlike DAG, Control Risk operates in Palma, providing security services to several Rovuma gas companies.
Control Risk’s entry comes as a response to the death of foreigners in Palma, and is indicative of an increasing predisposition to support government forces, one source said.
