The Spanish government on Thursday condemned Wednesday’s terrorist attack on the town of Palma, Cabo Delgado province, which it said “constitutes a major qualitative leap” in the terrorist threat in the province.
“Spain condemns the terrorist attack that took place around 4:30 pm yesterday, 24 March, in the city of Palma, in Cabo Delgado Province (Mozambique), which constitutes a major qualitative leap in the terrorist threat in this province,” reads the statement issued by the country’s foreign ministry
“The Government of Spain declares its concern over the situation and is closely following the development of events in coordination with the authorities in Mozambique, both in Maputo and in Pemba, the United Nations, the EU and other EU Member States,” adds the communique.
The Spanish executive also “reiterates its solidarity with the Government of Mozambique in its fight against terrorism, and with the people of Mozambique, particularly with the citizens of Cabo Delgado, who have been suffering from the consequences of a conflict for the last three years that has left more than 2,000 dead and 650,000 displaced”.
Mozambique has, since 2019, been considered one of the priority African countries for Spain to establish strategic partnerships.
