Construction has started on a one-stop border post between Zóbuè in Mozambique’s Tete province and Mwanza in Malawi.
Budgeted at 3.1 billion kwacha, the project is financed by the World Bank through the Malawi Road Authority.
Preliminary construction on the project is now taking place on the Malawian side.
The spokesman for Mwanza migration services, Pasqually Zulu, said that the installation of one-stop border posts on popular transport corridors was aimed at expediting the movement of goods and travellers.
On completion of the project, Zulu said, officials from the Mwanza border in Malawi and the Zóbuè border in Mozambique would be operating under one roof which will in the end improve timely clearance of goods and people.
Malawi’s geographical position, which renders it dependent on the ports of Beira in Mozambique and Durban in South Africa, means it makes heavy use of the Mwanza/Zóbuè border crossing.
About 17% of container traffic and 13% of the bulk cargo that passes through the port of Beira is destined for Malawi, third by volume after Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Much of this traffic crosses borders at Zóbuè and Calómuè, both in Tete province, making them prime candidates for one-stop migration and customs facilities.
A similar project is underway at the Songwe border with Tanzania.
