Two men, aged 34 and 36, accused of stealing a herd of 70 cattle at the Serra-Chôa administrative post, are being held in Catandica, Báruè district, Manica province.
In addition, the alleged thieves were caught transporting several beef carcasses in a minibus stripped of its seats.
Crifo de Lameque Chimbera and Lapson Jossefo Flower, both born in the Chôa administrative post and residents in Catandica, were seized while trying to transport the meat from there to Vandúzi.
One of the detainees is the son of one of the breeders who were victims of the theft in Serra-Chôa.
The defendants explained that the scheme failed due to communication deficiencies with accomplices in the area the animals were destined for.
According to police district commander Eliseu Mpila, the individuals’ capture was greatly aided by the collaboration of his counterpart in Vandúzi, based on popular tip-offs.
The neutralisation of the two men was cause for great satisfaction among the victims, who thanked the government and the police district command for their response, and for locating and apprehending the criminals.
