The Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric Plant (HCB) in Tete on Thursday started increasing water discharges until April, Radio Mozambique reports.
From Thursday until to March 31, 3,700 cubic metres of water per second will be discharged (against the current 3,100). In April , discharges will be increased to 4,100 cubic metres per second
The measure aims to safeguard the structural security of the dam, taking into account the moderately heavy rains in the Upper Zambezi region, combined with high volumes of water coming from Zambia.
ARA-Centro indicates in a statement that this operation may cause low to moderate floods in the districts of Cahora Bassa, Marara, Tete, Motize, Doa and Mutarara in Tete province, Tambara district in Manica, Chemba, Caia and Marromeu districts in Sofala, and Luabo, Mopeia and Chinde in Zambézia.
These floods may impact the passability of some roads.
Ara recommends that all public and private entities, economic agents and the public in general take precautionary measures, such as moving away from flood risk areas and avoiding dry river beds.
