Former prime minister of Mozambique, Luisa Diogo, says she believes that the country will overcome the consequences of its burgeoning public debt, but will have to pass through difficult times to achieve this.
Speaking on Saturday in Maputo after laying a wreath in Mozambican Heroes Square during the country’s 41st independence celebrations, Diogo said that public debt directly affected the state budget and would affect development sectors.
“From both the economic and social points of view, we are going through hard times, because when the major economic and development instrument of the country – the state budget – is affected, everything is affected. So, we will face difficult times, but we know that we will overcome them,” Diogo said.
Diogo said that the government had to strive to find the best solutions for the country’s problems and face them calmly.
“We Mozambicans have faced many such problems and managed to overcome them,” she said.
Speaking about the country’s 41 years of independence, the former prime minister said that the date should serve as a moment for reflecting on the future of the country, and that Mozambicans should be inspired by the ideals of their first president, Samora Machel.
Commenting on the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union, Diogo said she believed that European countries would continue to have good relations with Mozambique.
” We have very good bilateral relations and will certainly continue to do so,” she said.
