The Mozambican health authorities announced on Sunday a further 11 deaths from the Covid-19 respiratory disease, and 578 new cases.
According to a Health Ministry press release, the latest victims were all men aged between 54 and 80. Ten were Mozambicans and one was a foreigner (whose nationality was not revealed). Seven died in Maputo and four in Nampula. Two of the deaths were declared in Friday, seven on Saturday and two on Sunday.
This brings the total number of Covid-19 deaths in Mozambique to 641. The great majority – 504 (78.6 per cent) – died in Maputo city.
Since the start of the pandemic, 423,338 people have been tested for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 2,738 of them in the previous 24 hours. Of the samples tested, 983 were from Maputo city, 352 from Sofala, 341 from Maputo province, 288 from Inhambane, 216 from Nampula, 176 from Niassa, 122 from Zambezia, 99 from Cabo Delgado, 87 from Gaza, 60 from Tete and 14 from Manica.
2,160 of the tests gave negative results and 578 people tested positive for the coronavirus. This brought to 59,530 the number of people who have tested positive since the first Covid-19 case was diagnosed on 22 March 2020.
The positivity rate (the proportion of those tested found to be carrying the virus) among those diagnosed on Sunday was 21.1 per cent. This is not far removed from the positivity rates for the past week, which were as follows:

Of the cases reported on Sunday, 563 are Mozambicans, 14 are known to be foreigners (but the Ministry release did not give their nationalities) and the nationality of one person has yet to be confirmed.
316 are men or boys and 262 are women or girls. 35 are children under the age of 15 and 33 are over 65 years old. In 20 cases, no age information was available.
222 of the new cases were from Maputo city and 106 from Maputo province. Thus Maputo city and province provided 56.7 per cent of the cases reported on Sunday. There were also 69 cases from Niassa, 48 from Inhambane, 47 from Sofala, 28 from Cabo Delgado, 25 from Nampula, 19 from Zambezia, nine from Gaza, four from Tete and one from Manica.
In the same 24 hour period, 61 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital (23 in Maputo, 21 in Matola, and 17 in Nampula), but 69 new cases were admitted (26 in Nampula, 22 in Maputo and 21 in Matola).
As of Sunday, 217 people were under medical care in the Covid-19 isolation units (down from 220 on Saturday). The great majority – 152 (70 per cent) – were in Maputo. There were also 17 in Matola, 11 in Nampula, 11 in Sofala, nine in Zambezia, seven in Tete, three in Cabo Delgado, three in Niassa, two in Inhambane, one in Gaza and one in Manica.
The Ministry also reported that a further 335 people had made a full recovery from Covid-19 (140 in Sofala, 124 in Inhambane, 58 in Nampula and 13 in Zambezia). This brings the total number of recoveries to 41,096, which is 69.2 per cent of all those diagnosed in Mozambique with the coronavirus.
The number of active Covid-19 cases in the country hs risen to 17,609 (up from 17,377 on Saturday). The geographical distribution of these cases is as follows: Maputo city, 10.785 (61.2 per cent of the total); Maputo province, 2,210; Sofala, 1,455; Cabo Delgado, 757; Inhambane, 518; Niassa, 469; Nampula, 405; Zambezia, 390; Tete, 349; Manica, 189; and Gaza, 82.
