The authorities in the municipalities of Nampula, Nacala and Mozambique Island, all in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula, have launched an operation to remove informal sellers from the streets, as a measure to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 respiratory disease.
Informal trade generates crowds, and crowds provide an environment in which the coronavirus that causes covid-19 can more easily be transmitted.
The Secretary of State for Nampula, Mety Gondola, has warned of the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the province, which are threatening the availability of beds and of staff in the health system.
The mayor of Nampula city, Paulo Vahanle, guaranteed that the campaign to remove the street sellers is going ahead, despite some foci of resistance.
“We have speeded up the removal of the street sellers, to see if we can solve or reduce the contamination”, said Vahanle. “In the Waresta wholesale market, there are guidelines that all users, including both stallholders and their clients, should wear face masks”.
The local authorities are also worried about funerals, since inside the cemeteries there is “total disrespect” for the measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Funerals ought to have no more than 20 people attending, and only ten if the person being buried died of Covid-19.
“In the municipal cemeteries and in the communities, we are raising awareness about the need to observe the government decree on this matter”, said Vahanle. “There are teams with the mission to spread this information and assure that the measures are observed”.
In the port of Nacala, the mayor, Raul Novinte, confirmed that the crowd of sellers who used to obstruct the main entrance to the town, making the circulation of people and goods difficult, has been removed.
“We had a great problem in the Tchumbo market”, said Novinte. “But the sellers have gone, and there is now enough space for people and cars to move. We have encouraged the correct use of masks, because this matter has nothing to do with political parties or religion. It’s a serious illness and we must opt for prevention”.
Iahrira Chacufa, mayor of Mozambique Island, said there is coordination between the various authorities in the fight against Covid-19.
“We have had cases of Covid-10, but the joint work of the health authorities and the municipality have helped ensure that the situation is not very alarming”, said the Mayor. “Those who used not to believe in the disease do now. Seeing relatives and friends who were contaminated has helped raise awareness”.
Last Friday, the Chinese embassy offered 15 ventilators, ten generators of medicinal oxygen, and assorted other material for fighting Covid-19 to the Nampula provincial government.
The provincial governor, Manuel Rodrigues, said this equipment will help minimise the loss of life from Covid-19 in the province.
“We lament the loss of 13 lives in Nampula, and currently we have six patients hospitalised in isolation wards”, said Rodrigues. “These numbers draw our attention to the need to prevent Covid-19”.
