Twenty-two police officers have died from Covid-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic in Mozambique, Commander-General of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) Bernardino Rafael has said.
Commander-General Rafael explained that the deaths were proof that the members of the police are among the professional classes most exposed to the disease.
“Those who died are our colleagues, and this is a red flag for all of us. It shows that we are exposed, and that we are vulnerable to Covid-19,” he said.
Rafael urged PRM members to reinforce prevention, pointing out that society needed the work of the corporation.
By Thursday, Mozambique’s health authorities had reported 571 Covid-19 deaths and 53,527 confirmed cases, 33,804 of whom are considered recovered, while 273 were still hospitalised, 212 (77.7%) in Maputo, the country’s capital.
