At a time when there seems to be intense action by the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) in various parts of the central and northern districts of Cabo Delgado, reports are circulating suggesting that government troops are in the town of Mocímboa da Praia.
This is a place from where no verifiable news has arrived since its seizure by terrorist gangs in August of last year.
A report to which mediaFAX has had access indicates that an undetermined number of people, apparently civilians, were found in the forests of Mocimboa da Praia by the FDS and taken to the hospital in the district headquarters town.
Although information on the subject is scarce, mediaFAX found two versions of this report.
The first narrative maintains that these are people who, despite the conflict, preferred to remain in the town because they allegedly had nowhere else to go. The second advances the possibility of these being people who had been taken hostage by terrorists and then left behind, all in the logic of the supposedly complicated situation facing the terrorists. Seeing them unarmed and living in huts, the FDS would have taken them to the district headquarters, as reported.
Mocimboa da Praia district is one of the areas of FDS’s greatest concern, hence the density of human and material resources deployed to that part of Cabo Delgado province.
Some time ago, the Commander General of Police of the Republic of Mozambique, Bernardino Rafael, denied that that district town was “under [the] control” of the terrorists. At the time, Bernardino Ragael answered a question and seemed to suggest that the town was a kind of “no-man’s land,” under neither terrorist nor FDS control.
