The National Directorate of Water Resources has warned that the Umbeluzi River in Maputo province may be contaminated with fuel, following the derailment of a train in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
According to a press release received by Radio Mozambique, a train carrying an unspecified quantity of diesel fuel destined for the kingdom of Eswatini derailed on the Goba line last Thursday, spilling fuel that is flowing towards the Umbeluzi River.
The document states that laboratory analyses are underway to determine the degree of water contamination.
The National Directorate of Water Resources Management is calling on people to take precautionary measures, and avoid using water from the river without proper treatment.
