The city of Beira will on Saturday host its first ever TEDx conference, bringing together a clutch of heavyweight guests to speak about a topic some would say runs in the veins of this city, and of the Mozambican people as a whole: “Resilience”.
TEDX is a local version of the international TED conference where diverse experiences are embraced through the sharing of innovative ideas, thought-provoking talks and constructive dialogue on topics related to our day-to-day livelihood. The event is organised by volunteers, supported by local companies who share the same ideals as TED.
Companies such as TMcel, Cornelder de Moçambique, Tatos SA, Royal Haskoning, Moz World, Master Class, Club of Mozambique and several others stepped forward in the sponsoring of this event and making it happen.
TEDxBeira was initially planned to take place before an audience of 100 people, and almost all seats had been sold, but, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the restriction in force, the organizers had to refund the tickets. The event had earlier been postponed as a result of Cyclone Eloise.
But now, finally, with the help of Cornelder de Moçambique, TEDx Beira will take place, streamed live on TEDxBeira pages on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
Speakers
Invited to speak tomorrow, starting at 8:00 a.m. and continuing until at least 1:00 p.m. are:
Beira has in the past few years been a victim of the terrible effects of climate change. In two years, three tropical cyclones – Idai, Chalane and Eloise – have hit the capital city of Sofala province in central Mozambique, devastating business and day-to-day life.
A team of organisers – Nelia Manaca, Freeman Dickie and Felisberto Botao – together with volunteers Antonio Junior, Irlandra Aurelio, Kainara Sidumo and Marco Ferrao, have organised the TEDxBeira conference with themes relevant to the adversities that have befallen their beloved city and affected lives across Beira and Mozambique’s central provinces of Sofala, Zambezia and Inhambane.
The perseverance it took to organise the event and make it happen amidst the current challenges, and against all odds, well exemplifies the theme of the conference, making it shine even brighter: “RESILIENCE”.
The Beira TEDx conference runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, 13 February, 2021.
