Mozambique recorded more cases, more hospitalisations and more deaths from Covid-19 in January alone than in the whole of 2020, according to the Ministry of Health (Misau).
In the first month of this year, the new coronavirus caused 201 deaths, that is, more than half (54.7%) of the 367 that the country has officially recorded since the beginning of the pandemic up until Sunday [January 31].
Mozambique recorded 20,012 Covid-19 cases in January, which is the equivalent to about half (51.7%) of the accumulated total of 38,654 cases.
Hospitalisations due to Covid-19 rose sharply, causing increased pressure on health services. Since the year began, there were 887 hospitalisations, while in the whole of 2020 there had been 801.
This means that daily admissions to health units have increased five-fold. For example, on December 31, 2020, 54 people were hospitalised, while on Sunday there were already 251.
In January, there were over 7,292 recovered cases, which corresponds to about a third of all patients who overcame the disease. On Sunday, recoveries represented 61.9% of the accumulated total of cases, while, at the end of 2020, they were 89.3%.
In light of the situation, on January 13, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi announced a tightening of restrictions for 21 days to prevent the spread of the virus, shortening hours of commerce and restaurants, closing some establishments and cultural spaces and banning access to beaches, among other measures.
An analysis of the results of the measures and the evolution of the pandemic in general is expected later this week.
“After 21 days in force, starting at 00:00 on Friday [January 15] , a new assessment of the measures will be made, that is, after February 4, based on the evolution of the Covid-19 cases,” a January 14 statement from the presidency read.
