The Minister of National Defence, Jaime Bessa Neto, said in Maputo on Friday that the actions of terrorists in the north of Cabo Delgado province and of the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta are increasingly being weakened by the actions of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS).
Minister Neto was speaking at the launch ceremony of the first edition of the Scientific Journal on Defence and Security and of the work, “Poverty Alleviation in Mozambique: an Ethical-Christian Perspective”, by João Aleixo, which took place at the Lieutenant General Armando Emílio Guebuza Higher Defence Studies Institute (ISEDEF) in Matola, Maputo province.
The minister reminded his listeners that the terrorists had announced in December last year that they would take over Palma district, in Cabo Delgado, by the 1st of January this year, which had not happened, and that, on the contrary, they were registering heavy losses.
He encouraged young people in the Northern Operational Theatre to continue to tighten their siege on the enemy and restore peace.
“We want those displaced to return to their areas of origin soon, and resume their day-to-day activities,” the minister said, adding that defeating terrorism would not be accomplished in a day, but would involve selfless work, not only by the FDS, but the public, too.
Jaime Neto called on society as a whole to continue persuading young people to guard against being manipulated into fighting against their own country.
The minister said that the same weakening of actions was taking place in the centre of Mozambique, where there was again a slowdown in attacks by the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta.
“I think that society is feeling that it has significantly reduced the number of attacks along National Roads One and Six, because the Defence and Security Forces are permanently in pursuit of the enemy,” Neto said, adding that, since Mariano Nhongo had rejected President Nyusi’s offer of dialogue, there was no alternative but to pursue him until his neutralisation.
