The Defence and Security Forces (SDS) continue to gain ground and improve security in the districts of Cabo Delgado province which, for some time now, have been plagued by terrorist attacks, commander-in-chief of the police Bernardino Rafael announced yesterday.
The PRM commander was speaking at the end of a working visit to the border at Namaacha, Maputo province, where he went to find out about security aspects, and especially about travellers illegally entering and exiting the country.
Rafael said that FDS operations had improved security and enhanced the free movement of people and goods, but added that work to restore peace continued at other points of conflict.
Quissanga, Macomia, Ibo and Meluco were among the districts with significantly improved security, he said. In Nangande, the situation was improving, but with some points of instability still to be resolved.
“When a war breaks out, it is an arduous process to recover territory, and that is what the FDS are doing – regaining territory and restoring public order and security,” Rafael said.
The FDS were also committed to restoring order and security in the centre of the country, he added.
“At this point [centre of the country], the self-styled Renamo Military Junta has not yet accepted the offer made by the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the FDS, Filipe Nyusi, to hand itself in and join the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration process,” he said.
This was not the first time that the group has failed to take advantage of dialogue initiatives, he added, stressing that, under the present conditions, the FDS would continue to work towards restoring order and the free movement of people and goods.
