Mozambique: Normal fuel supply restored in the city of Tete - O País
The first victim was said to have died on Sunday night, and the second, a 20-year-old man residing in Namanhumbir, on Wednesday.
Two illegal miners died in the Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) concession area in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, one two Sundays ago and the other on Wednesday, the company said in a statement this Friday.
The first victim, whose identity and place of origin is unknown, is said to have died on Sunday (January 14) night, and the second, a 20-year-old resident of Namanhumbir, died on Wednesday, both after the collapse of illegal mines, the document issued by the mining company and sent to Lusa this Friday reads.
“The two cases were immediately reported to the police, who went to the scene, with a view to ascertaining the situation and removing the bodies of the illegal miners for further legal proceedings and medical investigation,” the MRM added.
The mining company has warned repeatedly of the dangers of illegal ruby mining, which it says killed at least 25 people in its concession area in 2020, mostly young men from other countries or from distant villages.
“The unsafe practices of illegal miners, who are normally supervised or coerced by gem smuggling syndicates financed by foreign traders operating in the region, continue to result in unnecessary loss of life,” the company warns.
Montepuez Ruby Mining has the mining concession over 34,000 hectares of land in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, and presents itself as the main investor in the extraction of rubies in Mozambique, being 75% owned by British Gemfields and 25% by Mozambican Mwiriti Limitada.
