Lusomundo Moçambique has closed two cinemas in Maputo city, justifying the decision on the basis of the Covid-19 crisis.
“Lusomundo Mozambique recently ceased operations at two movie theatres in Maputo, as a result of the economic crisis that Mozambique is experiencing, aggravated by the pandemic situation existing throughout the world for almost a year,” Lusomundo told Lusa.
The advance of Covid-19 “led to a tightening of measures and restrictions, such that, as in Portugal, movie theatres in Mozambique are now closed in their entirety,” the company added.
Despite the closure of Lusomundo cinemas at Maputo Shopping in the capital, the reopening of the other three Lusomundo theatres – in Parque dos Poetas, Matola, and on the outskirts of Maputo – is expected when restrictions on cultural venues are lifted.
A state of emergency was declared in Mozambique in April, 2020, in an attempt to halt the spread of the new coronavirus, followed by an easing of measures in September with the introduction of a state of calamity.
However, new restrictions, including the closing of cinemas, were announced this month, following an acceleration in the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
Lusomundo Moçambique is controlled by NOS SGPS and NOS Cinemas.
The company says the cultural sector has been “one of those most affected by the pandemic”, which has also affected “the distribution sector and the debut of new titles, hindering the activity and consequent sustainable development of the film industry”.
