Since yesterday morning, search and rescue operations are underway to reach 400 families along the Búzi river and in some interior villages [in Sofala], following intense rain in the region.
Speaking to ‘Notícias’ in Beira, the Permanent Secretary of Búzi district, Sérgio Costa, praised the public, who had cooperated fully in their removal to temporary shelter in the 25 de Setembro and 3 de Fevereiro primary schools and to the facilities of the Companhia do Búzi.
Yesterday, rescue efforts were directed at Buzi’s peripheral neighbourhoods Mandie-1 and 2, Martinoti, Companhia do Búzi and Muchenessa, in addition to Begaja and Quilómetro-37 in the Estaquinha administrative post, and Mussinema, Bupira and Bwe in Guara-Guara.
The district headquarters village is completely cut off, with the Tica-Búzi road under water for 500 metres, all the way to the bridge over the river Muda in Nhamatanda.
Circulation of people and goods between Bándua and Ampara, Nhamichindo and Gwenjhe is also interrupted, while use of the Búzi-Nova Sofala road is already constrained and risks being cut altogether.
Costa said that the National Civil Protection Unit (UNAPROC) was operating a fleet of nine vessels, with another 15 on standby. Supplies of fuel for emergency operations and the provision of food and non-food items for those displaced have been assured.
District authorities say that the floods along the Búzi river are the result of heavy rains upstream and preventative discharges from the Chicamba and Mavuzi hydro-electric dams in Manica, the neighbouring province.
