The first three months of the year are typically characterised by a strong demand for tax services, to facilitate the payment of vehicle, personal, property and other municipal taxes before March 31.
The cities of Maputo, Matola and the Vila de Boane started the process on January 4th, right after the end-of-year festivities, and many residents have headed to counters to regularise their tax situation.
Queues outside the tax collection offices and slow service seem to have been the dominant characteristics of the first days for paying the Municipal Vehicle Tax (IAV) and the Radio Fee.
At the Aterro da Maxaquene collection point in downtown Maputo, residents started arriving in the early hours, but service delays led some to abandon their place in the queue. Some of those who stayed waited more than two hours to pay their taxes.
In KaMpfumu District, the Karl Marx Avenue collection office also saw long queues, but they were well organized, with users respecting Covid-19 prevention measures.
The Zimpeto collection post was one of the few that registered low demand, a situation which saw users waiting only 20 and 30 minutes to pay the IAV, radio fee and Personal Municipal Tax (IPA). That’s why Sara Cossa Rungo, who lives in Mumemo, Marracuene, came to this branch to pay her taxes, and also have her vehicle inspected and insurance regularized.
Another resident who took the time to regularise his taxes was Khongolote resident Telmo Mambo, who said it was important that citizens took responsibility for settling their fiscal situation on time.
