Mozambique: Country’s first cooking gas factory projected – Notícias

Construction of what will be Mozambique’s first industrial unit for the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG – cooking gas), will start this year in Inhambane province.

The unit will have production capacity of 30,000 tons of LPG per year, substantially reducing imports of the resource.

The National Petroleum Institute (INP) reports that the construction of the cooking gas production unit results from the revision of the Development Plan of SASOL, the South African multinational operating in the Pande and Temane fields in Inhambane province.

“The government last September approved the amendment to the Development Plan for the Inhassoro, Temane and Temane-Este deposits of the Production Sharing Contract presented by the multinational, according to which Sasol ‘will ensure the start of the construction of the infrastructure that will house the project later this year’,” the INP states.

The development of the project is seen as strategic, since, at the moment, Mozambique is exclusively dependent on imports, and therefore exposed to fluctuations in the international market, coupled with the fact that the country does not have plentiful storage capacity, and has gained relevance with the discovery of light oil in the Inhassoro region.

Sasol estimates that US$1.4 billion will be needed for the completion of the first phase of the undertaking, which includes the drilling of 13 wells close to the existing processing plant in Temane, also in Inhassoro district.

The INP also says that the government has, with the development of gas projects in the country, been maximising the gains from the exploitation of hydrocarbons in order to ensure that more Mozambican benefit from these resources, in an increasingly significant way.
