Bishop Carlos Matsinhe was elected president of the CNE on Friday, January 15, with 11 votes against the six obtained by the Renamo candidate, Apolinário João.
After the election, Fernando Mazanga, a member of the body also appointed by Renamo, outlined his objection to the election of Matsinhe, a bishop of the Anglican Church nominated for the CNE by the Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM).
“I have nothing against Dom Carlos Matsinhe; I have a problem with the abuse of the church. You cannot use a cleric for these processes. As a cleric, a representative of God on Earth, one should abstain from mundane things. One cannot serve God and the Devil at the same time,” said Mazanga, cited today by ‘Carta de Moçambique’.
Of all five past CNE presidents, only one has not been as a religious leader; João Leopoldo da Costa, who helmed the CNE between 2008 and 2013. Da Costa joined the organ through the National Teachers Organization (ONP).
