Lídia Frederico Cossa Camela, the mayor of Chókwè, died on Saturday, of an undisclosed illness.
Lídia Cossa first became mayor of Chókwè municipality in 2013, on the Frelimo ticket, a party whose mandate she renewed in the 2018 municipal elections.
“The mayor of the so-called economic capital of Gaza was treated lovingly by Teacher Lídia
Cossa graduated in Sociology from the Open University of Lisbon and, since her school days, pursued a long affinity with politics.
In an interview she gave to ‘Notícias’ in 2014, shortly after her election, Cossa said that she was a member of cultural groups and “her strong point was poetry and theatre, at the time that she joined the frantic 1980s youth movement”.
At the time of the interview, the mayor of Chokwe was “married and the mother of two children, an entrepreneur associated with her husband in the area of vehicle repair and maintenance”.
Her life experience, she told ‘Notícias’, included agricultural hydraulics [irrigation] and various jobs in the former LOMACO company, where she worked as an accountant, in addition to working as a history teacher for several years.
Her entry into the political arena, Cossa said, was greatly influenced by her parents, who encouraged her to join both the Mozambican Youth Organization and the Mozambican Women’s Organization.
Prior to her election, Lídia Cossa was secretary of the Municipal Assembly of the City of Chókwè.
Lídia Cossa’s passion for politics never prevented her from enjoying many other activities, sports amongst them, especially basketball and handball, in which modalities she on several occasions represented the province of Gaza.
