Mozambican health authorities are preparing the Military Hospital of Maputo to receive Covid-19 patients in response to the increase in the number of infections that has been registered in the country since last week, an official source announced on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Health plans to equip the Military Hospital with 100 beds and also to increase the capacity of the Polana Caniço isolation centre in the city of Maputo, national director of Medical Assistance of Mozambique Ussene Isse has said.
“The short-term scenario is to work on two fronts, preparing the Military Hospital and Polana Caniço and having 200 more beds available,” he said.
At issue is the increase in the daily number of Covid-19 infections and deaths in Mozambique, which peaked on Friday with six deaths and a further 879 confirmed cases.
“If the preventive measures issued by the government are not followed, I can guarantee that there will not be enough human resources, nor hospitals, nor enough beds to save people’s lives,” he warned.
Since the announcement of the first case of infection with the new coronavirus in Mozambique on March 22 of last year, a total of 23,726 Covid-19 cases have been recorded, 77% of which are reported as having recovered.
Mozambique had, by Wednesday, registered 205 Covid-related deaths.
