Coca Cola Sabco invests US$130 million in Mozambican bottling plant

South African group Coca Cola Sabco has invested US$130 million in building a new bottling plant in Matola Gare, on the outskirts of the capital Mozambican capital, Maputo, in a ceremony attended by the President of Mozambique.

The new facility will start producing 50 million Coca-Cola product crates per year, increasing to 70 million at a later date, before reaching the maximum capacity of 150 million crates per year.

This plant, which took three years to build, is the largest Coca-Cola Sabco bottling unit in the seven African countries – South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Uganda – in which the group has plants.

This new plant, built from scratch, replaces the previous one that suffered extensive damage due to floods that hit southern Mozambique in February 2000.

In Mozambique the South African group also has Coca-Cola product bottling plants in in Chimoio, Manica province, opened in July 1997 and in Nampula (June 2011) where it bottles products Schweppes, Sparletta, Minute Maid, Twist and Mazoe products as well as Coca-Cola, Coke Light, Coke Zero, Fanta, Sprite and Bonaqua.

The Coca-Cola Sabco group is 80-percent owned by Gutsche Family Investments and is based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and has bottled Coca-Cola products since 1940.
