The National Migration Service of Mozambique (SENAMIi) said on Wednesday that the South African authorities passed on information about the closure of the land borders between the two countries in effect since Monday, “late”.
“Information arrived late on this side. Under normal conditions, it is necessary to communicate [these things] in advance so that we can inform our fellow citizens that travel to South Africa is restricted,” SENAMI spokesman Celestino Matsinhe told public broadcaster Radio Mozambique.
Matsinhe did not specify on which day the Mozambican authorities received the communication on South Africa’s decision to partially close its land borders, a measure in force since January 12 and scheduled to stay in place until February 15.
South African authorities have decided to partially close land borders with neighbouring countries because of the intensification of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The only exceptions to the measure are the transportation of fuel, cargo and goods, patients in need of urgent medical attention, the return of citizens to their own countries, permanent residents or travellers with valid visas, diplomats, and foreign students.
