Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) have thwarted a terrorist attempt to take the island of Matemo, in Cabo Delgado. Order has been restored since Saturday, two days after the terrorists attacked the Ibo district island.
The Commander-General of Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Bernardino Rafael, visited the island on Sunday and met local residents to thank them for their cooperation, which he said had played an important in the success of the FDS operation.
“Thank you for reporting where they were,” Radio Mozambique quotes him as saying. “If we were able to attack, to shell, it was because you said ‘They are in that house, in that school’. Thank you very much.”
Rafael underlined that “the FDS can only do a good job in collaboration with of the population denouncing the location of the enemies of Mozambique”.
“We have searched for the force that came here, and at this moment we are sure that they have left. Our activities will continue,” Rafael said, encouraging young people not to identify with the terrorists because, he said, joining them would be destroying their own country.
The terrorists operating in Cabo Delgado have now attacked the island of Matemo twice, the first time in October 2020, and the second last Thursday (January 7).
There were no casualties during this latest attack, only some theft of property, and Ibo district authorities say that food supplies will arrive within days to support those whose supplies were stolen.
The island residents have asked the government to keep a contingent of the FDS permanently stationed in Matemo.
