Just over 900 families (about 5,000 people) currently living with relatives in Pemba are being resettled in the Mesa administrative post, Ancuabe district, in a pilot neighbourhood for victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
At the moment, the number of people displaced by terrorism in the north of Cabo Delgado province is estimated at nearly 600,000.
For the resettlement of victims, 950 plots of land in the Nanzua neighbourhood were parcelled out, one for each family, in an attempt to relieve the city of Pemba of some of the estimated 150,000 people who have moved there, sometimes living 30 to 50 souls per household.
The Secretary of State for Cabo Delgado province, Armindo Ngunga, who visited the resettlement area on Friday [January 8], stressed that the project was a pilot in building entire villages, with basic social infrastructure such as schools, health centres, churches and a police station.
